APSA presents several annual dissertation prizes covering a range of subfields. Dissertations must be nominated by the Graduate Department where the dissertation was completed. Departments are invited annually to nominate not more than one doctoral dissertation per award.
Dissertations eligible are those completed and accepted during the past two calendar years. Department submissions should be sent to each member of the award committee and include a letter of nomination and a copy of the dissertation. Departments must submit their nominations by January 15 of each year.
Nominating Information
Departments are requested to submit a letter of nomination and one copy of the dissertation nominated to each award committee member. A copy of the nomination letter must also be sent to the APSA Award Coordinator, to the Washington, D.C. address shown at the bottom of this page, and/or to awards@apsanet.org. The title of the dissertation and the name of the dissertation chair must be included in the letter of nomination. Dissertations must be bound in some fashion; please do not send loose leaf dissertations.
The deadline for 2006 nominations is January 15, 2006.
APSA Organized Section Dissertation Awards
The following dissertation awards will be presented by the Organized Sections of APSA at the 2005 Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. Individuals interested in submitting nominations for these prizes may do so until January 15, 2005, unless otherwise specified below. Please contact the individual listed under each award for futher information on deadlines and submission policies. One copy of the nominated dissertation should be submitted to each committee member, unless otherwise noted.
LEGISLATIVE STUDIES
Carl Albert Dissertation Award
Topics may be national of subnational in focus-on Congress, parliaments, state legislatures, or other representative bodies. Dissertation must have a 2003 or 2004 copyright date. The deadline for submission is March 1, 2005. Terms for submitting dissertation: (1) one copy sent to each member of the committee; (2) no more than one submission per PhD granting department; (3) letter form the department indicating the selection; and (4) a letter from the dissertation chair, or other appropriate committee member, describing the significance of the work. RELIGION AND POLITICS
Aaron Wildavsky Dissertation Award
For the best dissertation on religion and politics completed and accepted in 2004. The deadline for nominations/submissions is February 1, 2005. For more details, see Religion and Politics Organized Section.

Best Dissertation Award

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLITICS
Virginia Walsh Best Dissertation Award

WOMEN AND POLITICS
Best Dissertation Award
For the best dissertation on women and politics completed and accepted in 2004. To be eligible, a dissertation must be completed and successfully defended in in the previous calendar year. The deadline for submissions/nominations is January 15, 2005. Please send a copy of the dissertation to each committee member, along with a letter of recommendation by the Chair of the Dissertation Committee. EUROPEAN POLITICS AND SOCIETY
Best Dissertation Award

POLITICAL ECONOMY
Mancur Olson Dissertation Award
for the best dissertation completed and accepted in the previous two years. The deadline for submitting dissertations to the Olson committee is March 1, 2005. For more details, see the Political Economy Organized Section.
POLITICAL PSYCHOLOGY
Best Dissertation Award
For the best dissertation in political psychology filed during the previous year. Send a hard copy of the dissertation to each committee member. Self-nominations are accepted. All nominations should include a letter of support from the chair of the dissertation committee that addresses the contribution of the dissertation to the field of political psychology. RACE, ETHNICITY AND POLITICS
Best Dissertation Award
The Race, Politics, and Ethnicity Section of the American Political Science Association is accepting nominations for Best Dissertation completed in the period January 2004 to December 2004. Nominations and accompanying materials will be accepted until March 31, 2005. The selection will be announced at the 2005 Annual Meeting of the American Political Science Association. Nominations can be made by chairs of dissertation committees or individuals completing the dissertation. A nomination must include a precis of the dissertation (no more than 20 pages) and a brief cover letter explaining how the dissertation expands our understanding of race, ethnicity, and politics. After a review of the nomination materials submitted, members of the Best Dissertation Committee will request 4 hard copies of the complete dissertation of some nominees. COMPARATIVE DEMOCRATIZATION
Juan Linz Award
The Juan Linz prize, for the Best Dissertation in the Comparative Study of Democracy, a new award in 2004, will be presented for the first time at the 2005 APSA Annual Meeting. HUMAN RIGHTS
Best Dissertation Award
Political Science dissertations that focus on human rights and completed and accepted in the previous two calendar years (2003 and 2004) are eligible for the award competition. Copies of the nominated dissertation and a letter of support from the dissertation Chair, which should specify the contribution of the work to the field of human rights within no more than 1000 words, should be received by members of the Dissertation Award Committee by April 30, 2005.
