Visiting Scholars
Our Department's Visiting Scholars Program provides opportunities for qualified scholars from around the world to collaborate with our faculty, access research resources, and participate in UCSD events. To be considered for an appointment commencing the following academic year, complete application files should be received by December 1. Chosen applicants will be notified by February 1.
Visiting Scholar appointments are typically approved for a maximum of one year, though requests to renew for a second year will be considered in cases of ongoing collaborative research. The department does not support formal short-term visiting scholar appointments for periods of one quarter or less.
Application Requirements
Faculty Sponsor & Collaborative Research Project(s)
All visiting scholars are required to have a Political Science faculty sponsor with whom they will be collaborating during the
planned visit. It is the responsibility of the prospective visiting
scholar to provide
a research proposal detailing the collaborative project(s) and written documentation of the faculty member's commitment to serve as a
sponsor for the specified time period. This process should be
completed prior to submitting the application. Without a faculty
sponsor, the application is incomplete and will not be
considered. Please note that faculty sponsorship does not imply any
financial responsibility on the part of the faculty member or the
Department.
Doctoral Degree (Ph.D. or equivelant professional degree)
All visiting scholars are required to have a doctoral degree in hand before the commencement of the visit. Any requests for exceptions to this policy must be submitted and justified by the applicant's faculty sponsor.
Curriculum Vitae
All applications must include a current CV (in English).
Proof of Funding
The department does not provide any financial assistance to visiting scholars. Applicants must provide documentation of funding sources. (For non-U.S. citizens, such evidence will also be needed for the visa application.) If the original documentation is not in English, a translated copy must also be included.
Visa Status
Foreign applicants should include a brief description of current visa
status and indicate whether UCSD visa sponsorship for the visit is
required.
